Syros is located in the centre of the Cyclades Island complex in the Aegean Sea. Today it has a population of 22,000 inhabitants and its capital is Ermoupolis.
In Ermoupolis, the capital of the entire Prefecture of the Cyclades, you can visit the historic Apollo Theatre, which opens all year round, a cinema, a casino, a marina, and many local restaurants and tavernas.
Since Ermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades region, all main public services are available on the island. Health services are also available, and a fully staffed hospital is located nearby the centre of the town.

The Apollo opera
The Apollo opera, a cultural icon of the city, was built in 1862-1864 to the designs of the Italian architect Pietro Sampo.
Ano Syros
Ano Syros, a medieval settlement, is located on a hill close to Ermoupolis.
Apano Meria
The northern part of Syros, called “Apano Meria”, is mountainous and inhabited by a small population.
The area is of outstanding beauty and part of the European Natura 2000 Protected Areas
Beaches
Many deserted and organized beaches surround the island.
Transportation
The island has a very frequent regular ferry connection with the port of Piraeus as well as with the other Aegean islands with high-speed (2.5 hours) and regular (4 hours) passenger ferries.
There is also an airport with a daily connection with Eleftherios Venizelos, the main airport of Athens. It can be also used for private jet or helicopter flights. The flight from Athens Eleftherios Venizelos airport lasts 25 minutes.
